Tori Thomas
Tori Thomas's journey as an artist began in her early years, surrounded by creativity in an artistic household. Inspired by her father, a full-time portrait and landscape artist, Tori developed a love for painting, drawing, and creating from a young age. Today, she paints full-time from her studio in Mangawhai, Northland, where she channels her artistic background and years as a professional interior designer into each piece.
With over 15 years of experience in interior design, Tori draws from her passion for beautifully curated spaces and the natural beauty of rural Mangawhai. Her belief in the power of art within a space is at the heart of her work: “Art is an integral part of a space and the people that inhabit it. It can be a conversation starter, evoke emotion, and act as the finishing touch that brings a space together.”
Currently, Tori's work explores abstract florals. Her pieces are created through gestural expression, an exploration of color and texture, and a careful refinement of form. Her process moves fluidly from loose, expressive strokes to intentional layers, using not only brushes but also any tool within reach that helps to bring her vision to life. Her color palettes are often inspired by specific interior styles, blending her expertise in design with her artistic exploration. Tori works primarily in oil paints but also incorporates pastels, acrylics, spray paint, and oil sticks.
In addition to her studio work, Tori has exhibited her art in joint exhibitions and fairs across New Zealand, and in her hometown of Mangawhai at the Mangawhai Art Gallery’s “The Lounge.” She has also served as an artist-in-residence and contributed her work to various interior spaces, from office fit-outs to cafes and apartments.
Tori’s work captures a unique interplay of emotion, expression, and design, inviting viewers to connect deeply with each piece. Through her art, she seeks to bring a sense of harmony and inspiration into any space it inhabits.
